How Does an Electrostatic Filter Work?

An electrostatic filter has four main components: a pre-filter, an ionizer, a collector, and an after-filter. As air passes through the first filter, which is made out of a polyurethane and polypropylene blend, the filter becomes statically charged. The filter is made in such a way that different layers are given either a positive or negative charge, allowing the filter to effectively attract a large number of particles. As dust and other allergens make their way through each layer, they become trapped and removed from your home's air circulation. Conveniently, electrostatic filters can be used for several years, as long as you are periodically cleaning them.

Electrostatic filters are able to remove a wide variety of particles and allergens from your home, including:

  • Pollen
  • Mold
  • Dust particles
  • Dust mites
  • Pet dander
  • Bacteria

Are Electrostatic Filters the Right Choice?

When shopping around for air filters, you may have noticed that electrostatic filters tend to run on the pricier side. While more expensive than traditional air filters, electrostatic filters provide many benefits. For one, they can be rinsed and reused several times, unlike other filters. They also do not impact your HVAC system's airflow and will end up costing you less money in the long-run.
